oh my

At the end of May Austin got really sick.  It started with Zach the week before and went through me and Cal, then hit Austin the hardest.  The day after Zach's school program Oz fell asleep on the couch.  He no longer naps, and for him to fall asleep on the couch while I was cleaning up is unheard of.  I knew he was unwell.  We had had cough, sore throat, sinus, fever stuff, but it often hits Austin hard.  The next night I put the boys to bed and Cal went to play basketball.  Austin fell right asleep and when I took his temperature it was at 103.5.  I debated waking him to give him medicine, but decided to wait a little and check in on him again after I was done reading to Zach and had put him to bed.  When I checked again I found his temperature to be 105.6!  AH!  Panic!  A little over a year ago when Cal was in Peru he had a fever almost this high and it was bronchitis and pneumonia.  I sat with him and tried to cool him down and watched his breathing for awhile.  It was not good.  It was fast and was kind of jagged and starting and stopping a bit.  I tried to call Cal, but of course he was playing basketball and the sound was off on his phone.  So I called our on call doctor and they said he needed to be seen immediately.  So I called my mom and she went to the church to get Cal, then brought him home (he had ridden with a friend).  So my mom stayed with Zach and Cal and I took Oz to urgent care.  When we got there there was a wait of at least an hour just to go back, but upon seeing him we were rushed back.  They were convinced it was pneumonia, but it turned out not to be, although he did have some gunk in his lungs.  They did find he had a terrible ear infection, so he was started on antibiotics, which would also treat pneumonia if it turned into that.  He perked up a bit once we got his temperature down and his breathing became more regular.  We finally got to go home at about 1 am. Our poor little guy!  It is so scary to see you child so sick! And I know it's only a small thing compared to what it could be.  We are grateful that it wasn't worse!

Luckily he slept almost the whole time we were at Urgent Care, and wanted to be under his blanket.  He was so miserable.

Feeling grateful for good health.

I am glad to see him back to vigors. I also note that I was -not- at basketball that night, so i was not responsible for any non-present fathers!
